A former inhabitant of the Svartálfar city of Los Noir, Kraithe was born into a common family and thus held no real power or influence in the city. After his parents were killed after daring to raise their eyes to look at a noble’s carriage as it passed by, he was forced onto the streets to beg and steal what he could to survive. Fortunately he was quick and charming enough to get away with it, and eventually he found a band of like-minded individuals – drow, duergar and svirfneblin all – and they formed a rudimentary thieves’ guild. They managed to keep themselves in fine style for a number of years, and Kraithe even found love in the arms of a beautiful cat burglar called Shikari.
Such groups do not last long in Los Noir unless they keep a low profile and never, ever include the aristocracy in their list of acceptable targets. One day this rule was broken, however, when they mugged a poor-looking gentleman who turned out to be a noble out slumming it. Unfortunately they only determined this AFTER they made it back to their den and examined the contents of his money pouch, finding a House Styxx signet ring inside. Seeking to correct their mistake, they returned to the alley they’d jumped him in to find him lying in a pool of his own fluids.
Things went from bad to worse when a squadron of House Styxx troops stormed their den the next day. They were then informed in no uncertain terms that they could either use their special talents to rob House Laufey of a most valuable artefact – reputedly a scale of the great serpent Jörmungandr – or they could be tortured to death, and then resurrected, and then tortured to death over and over and over again.
Surprisingly, the job went off without a hitch; House Laufey was, after all, the most powerful family in Los Noir and would never expect another family to dare such a thing, let alone a common street gang such as Kraithe’s. After a week of planning, bribery, and setting Kraithe up to pose as a servant, he was able to slip in, retrieve the scale and deposit it at the dead drop location they’d been provided.
Upon returning to the den, however, Kraithe discovered that his guild had been massacred and their heads used to spell out the message ’You’re next, you Styxx lapdog’. This was impressive, if gruesome, given the limited number of heads and what had to be done to them in order to spell out the message. Figuring that a particularly bloody inter-house war was about to hit and that his life was worth about as much as House Laufey’s sense of mercy, Kraithe decided that discretion was the better part of valour and left the for the wilds of the Underdark, newly acquired survivor’s guilt and post traumatic stress disorder in tow…
Their first real conversation involved Kraithe telling her the events leading up to his accidental arrival in Skarra-Durr, where he related the tragic death of his guildmates and lover. Unfortunately she was more interested in getting a headline than anything else and coined ‘LOVE, STREWN ACROSS THE WALLS’ in response to being told that Shikari had been brutally murdered and her head used in the message. This drove Kraithe into a deep depression and has coloured their interactions (black, mostly) ever since.
Lukka Ny, Envoy of the Vostroiya
The other member of the party of the rogueish persuasion, Kraithe’s generally cheerful attitude is often at odds with her slightly sullen reaction to no longer being the only go-to person for locks and traps. Kraithe is more than happy to share the role, having worked as part of a guild before, and tries to talk shop and compare general techniques and methodologies but has so far been rebuffed.
The definitive muscle of the group, Kraithe vastly appreciates having a large half-orc to take cover behind and snipe enemies from. Recently she tried to explain the concepts of the sun and sky and the heliocentric model of the solar system, but has not made a lot of headway in convincing Kraithe that those things are real.
A surprisingly good candidate for a rogue if he were not already a mage. This has unfortunately been most apparent in determining the ownership of the (definitely Svartálfar-made and then subsequently looted by the dwarves) mithral chain shirt that was discovered. Kraithe is currently in possession.
While Kraithe initially held the usual attitude towards elves that drow have, this has changed from hatred and fear to pity and acceptance following his habit of throwing flaming pine cones at their enemies and turning into a bird at inopportune moments.
